Hiking and High School Basketball in Buckley

In March of 1993 David sat in the Tacoma Dome watching his Garfield Bulldogs beat the White River Hornets. Thirteen years, and three kissed girls later David was back in the stands to watch White River play a post season game. But how did he get there?

With Jason off in DC protecting Saira from fifteen feet of snow, Seth, David and new addition Mike (just like the old days) decided that a beautiful sunny day should be spent inside a high school gymnasium in Buckley. Seth has made it his goal to see every high school basketball playoff game in Western Washington, and he wasn’t going to let a little thing like a rare sunny and 60 degree February day stand in his way.

He sold the trip to the rest of the house by throwing in a hike along the White River. If anyone knows David they know he loves nature-- he was in. That left only Mike, who was beginning to learn that the more time one spends around Seth and David, the better one feels about oneself.

The deal was done, and holly crap Seth even drove.

The walk at Federation Forrest was time outdoors well spent, as indicated by these images (coming soon…the images). We even managed to free a giant rubber ball that had lost its way down the river, on a journey to reunite with its family.

Afterwards we headed to Buckley for lunch where we showed an old lady and a table full of firemen that the muscle city boys lack to open doors is made up by the amount complimentary water they can drink.

We also found a giant pair of wooden boots in the town’s historical district.

The game was played at White River High School, which looked like a textbook setting for a school shooting. Think Columbine with cow pastures. The game was won by Mount Rainer High School, who defeated the home town Hornets 58-51, and it wasn’t that close.

White River is now winless in games that David has watched in person. They will be taking down his statue that stands in the school’s main hall during a brief ceremony.
